HANDMADE HOLIDAY!: at plant zero, december 11, 2011.  it was a blast though totally exhausting.  met some awesome people and sold many coloring books and kinda scary custom action figures to little kids for way too cheap.  i am a sucker.  thanks for everyone who came out and big ups to the richmond craft mafia for hosting and organizing such a cool event!  see you there in the spring?

WONDERWALL COVER BY RYAN ADAMS:  heard this on the radio the other day and it made me cry.  i didn’t know i liked this guy but apparently i do.  cheesy, moody, haunting, BEAUTIFUL.

NEW ART!:  pieces for the bizarre market holiday here in balmy richmond, virginia.  a series of 4 customized action figures with accessories (some handmade, some not…)  the idea was “zombie apocalypse” but i ran out of time before i could finish the labels.  so now they can be anything you want!  disgruntled mutants, undead army dudes, alien enforcers, children’s game show hosts, y’know, whatever…

the piece for the tiny auction was kind of a revelation.  i had an idea to make a little mounted bust of one of my characters out of clay like it had been hunted and embalmed and it turned out really nice and appropriately creepy, i think.  i want to do more.  whaddya think?

MAX BROKE HIS WRIST LAST WEEK: at daycare! of all places!  apparently, he was trying to keep up with the older kids on the monkey bars and took a nasty spill.  he bruised the left side of his face which is healing nicely but he also broke his right wrist.  none of this has slowed him down in the least bit.  he is still climbing everything like a rabid monkey and has started to use his right hand more.  he says it itches and i am sure it does.  he has to wear his dinosaur cast for 3 weeks.  that thing is going to be stinky!  just sayin’…

also, should i be angry that this happened at the place where i pay people to watch my child and keep them out of danger?  ok, too late, i already am.  part of me wants to pull him out of there but he really has made a lot of progress socially.  he is definitely less shy around other kids and adults.  i think that was kind of the whole point anyway but i’m just not sure…

ZINE-FEST 2011: was quite awesome! thank you everyone who came out and supported this great event this past saturday at the gay community center!  it was a long day with a slow start but meeting old and new friends, seeing inspiring work, and eating food and drinking coffee from lamplighter roasting company was pretty magical.  people wanted me to sign the full-color poster that i designed which always makes me feel funny.  (like, who am i, y’know?!?)  big hi-fives for all the hard work the organizers put into the fest.  sorry if i didn’t say bye to you but i had some whiskey with my name on it waiting eagerly for me…see you next year? apologies for not getting close-ups of my new stuff.  i didn’t really expect it to go so fast!

PAINTING FOR ART AUCTION/MUSIC SHOW THIS SATURDAY: at my friends’ restaurant, the cellar door, here in richmond on monument ave and stuart circle.  the show benefits the wayside center which admittedly i know little about but it seemed cool and worthwhile when i googled them.  starts at 9pm.  i may or may not be there (karen is also having a party for her birthday!)

now sleepyhead (my band, yo) was asked to participate in a pavement cover song show in november.  we need to come up with a 15 minute set.  this is my favorite pavement song, “zurich is stained,” off of slanted and enchanted.  just a sketch, really…

SNEAK PREVIEW OF NEW ART SHOW:  the opening is thursday, september 1st, 5-8pm at Quirk, 311 W. Broad St., Richmond, VA 23220 in the cute little tiny gallery space in the back called The Vault.  these are 13 brand new paintings with some implementing 3D elements as well as more abstract imagery and brighter colors.  highly influenced by a recent book score, “Abstract Graffiti,” edited by cedar lewisohn.

painting by candlelight is tough on my poor myopic eyeballs.  luckily, we got our power back this morning!  now i can paint all night!  too bad i am exhausted!

see you there, yes?

MAX DRAWING AND PAINTING:  so my son is now drawing on his walls with chalk and painting with real acrylic paints and big boy brushes on canvases.  it is so amazing and mind-blowing to watch.  seemingly pure mark-making, just to do it.  no thought or preconceptions.  so free and inspiring.

(those are old canvases he is painting on, by the way.  max, steph, and i have all contributed to the pieces…)
