NEW LARGE PAINTINGS:  i spent a couple of days last week building 2 new 4x4 feet canvases and when i was done, i was nervous about painting on them!  so many possibilities, so many chances to screw it all up!  even more intimidating is the fact that i have about 4 months to work on these paintings (show in arlington in december,) probably the longest amount of time i’ve ever had for 2 pieces.  also i may be the only “unknown” artist in this show.  no pressure…

steph, max, and i went to the newly renovated virginia museum of fine arts on saturday where i was finally inspired to take paint to canvas.  reading a quote by jackson pollack made me loosen up…(paraphrasing:) “i have no preconceived idea before i start painting.  i just start working and the nature of the piece reveals itself to me.”  ah, the mysterious, joyful, and agonizing beauty of the painting process.

for painting “A,” i decided to skip the background for now and just dive right into layering my characters.  the idea is that they will blend and overlap in such a way to create their own background.  we’ll see how that goes.

i started with a neutral background for painting “B,” thinking it would make more vivid colors pop (yes and no.)
